A reel hot rod. A super-high retrieve rate reel, the Speedster S features a narrower spool, inboard mounted handle, and an outer diameter significantly larger than our highest performing reels. The narrow spool prevents line barreling, while the inboard handle and added circumference improve retrieve rate. Rev these features up with our classic Lamson styling and attention to detail—plus our time-tested, maintenance-free drag system—and you have what the name implies: a hot rod of a reel.

The dimensions of structure and function inspire beauty. An enhanced spool machining technique—focusing material only where it’s needed—is the reason why this version is significantly lighter and higher performing than its predecessor.

Sealed conical drag system

The Speedster S and Speedster S HD reels feature a fully CNC machined frame and spool for durability and lasting finish.

Our reels are sized for one line weight up or down. For example, a -5+ is appropriate 4/5/6wt fly lines. If you are in between sizes staying with the smaller reel is usually a good guideline. If you would prefer to prioritize backing capacity or like a larger arbor, the larger size will work better.

Yes, spare spools are available and they work on both the standard and HD reels.

HD = heavy duty. These reels feature a full frame design that captures fly line and prevents thin running lines from slipping between the frame and spool. Important for Euro Nymphing and Spey methods. The also makes the reels incredibly durable.

We use a proprietary sealed, conical drag that offers a wide range of drag settings with plenty of stopping power on the high end. This sealed drag can be used in fresh or saltwater and helps keep water and debris out.

Good value but

Very nice reel. Excellent drag, workmanship, most ergos are fine, attractive, capacities. The main issue for me is the very light weight does not balance well with my Sage X 7wt or Scott Sector 8 making wading for bonefish less than ideal. The rod tips drop into the water interfering with quick casting and the tip can even catch the bottom or turtle grass while walking. An unnecessary extra thing to be aware of while fishing.

Perfect Saltwater 8wt Reel

I bought the 9+ and paired it with an 8wt glass rod for striped bass & bluefish around Cape Cod, the Vineyard and Nantucket and the reel is ideal for this. It is super light weight, which is nice because the glass rod is heavy, compared to graphite. Plus the drag is very smooth and consistent which really helps when you get the occasional bass that’s bigger than expected. I use half a dozen Lamsons in saltwater throughout the season and they are absolutely dependable and a pleasure to fish.

This reel is perfection. There is nothing more to say. Lamson are the only fly reels that I would buy. Very happy with all of my Lamson reels. If you are on the fence. Jump over and you wont be disappointed.

Fights above its weight

Brought a two foot carp to hand in a river with the 3+. Was targeting small small mouths when this school bus lumbered by, couldn't resist. I credit this drag to the success. I have several Lamson reels for fresh and salt along with many other brands - I will continue to add more Lamsons.

Thats unreal!! I bet that was super exciting, stoked to hear the reel helped seal the deal.
